Assumptions and Stereotypes

The African American culture involves many stereotypes and assumptions.  A few of the most prevalent stereotypes are that we are uneducated and lazy. Some assume that we don’t believe in marriage and the family structure is broken.

These stereotypes and assumptions are not true for my family. We believe in hard work and education. We also value marriage and support various family structures. Many of these stereotypes and/or assumptions are unfounded and come from a place of judgment instead of understanding and compassion.
